Motherhood

EN: I wrote about the most difficult and most important part in my life, being a mother. I think it might be an interesting read both for other mothers and for women who are making plans…

Muuuult prea mare presiune. Ni se cer muuuult prea multe. De aici vina.

EN: It’s been quite a while since Raluca asked me to answer a few questions for her blog – WineBeforeNoon. Even Vlad has grown since then:) Even though my opinions on the parent- child relationship are still shaping and I can’t give any verdicts just yet, I feel like you could find yourselves in some of them, expressed in all honesty in this interview. I am waiting for a feedback whether I am right or wrong.

An important part of the chemistry between parent and child is – according to me – the parent’s ability to remain a kid at heart. And you do that very naturally. How did you manage to keep being a child yourself while still playing the part of an adult?

I think we all still have that child inside us and we would be a lot happier if listened to its needs more often. Most of the time, we seem to cover its mouth, punish it, so it doesn’t embarrass us. Because now we are all grown up. It’s a false impression that we are dissatisfied adults or, on the contrary, satisfied adults. The sorrows and joys are mostly the ones of the child within us, and not of the adult. When you become a parent, two good things happen to you at the same time. First of all, your child asks your inner child out to play. Do you remember how we used to shout to the balcony from the 5th floor “Alina’s mum, will you let Alina come out and play with me?”. Well, now your child is somehow saying: “Muuuum, will you let the child inside you come out and play?”. So he/ she is an important stimulator. And the second favorable thing is that now you have a good excuse in front of the rest. You get to make faces, race in the park, get dirty from ice cream… and you leave the impression that it’s all for the child, because you want to make him/ her happy. But seriously now, I think it’s for both. Today I played hide and seek with him in the  Cărturești Verona garden until they brought our food and I swear it was premium therapy.

#Momguilt. Do you think mom guilt is  a sign that we care and that we are involved? Or is it more because we set impossible to achieve standards for ourselves?

Before having Vlad I prepared myself psychically that it’s gong to be hard, that we’ll have sleepless nights, crying, breastfeeding pains and others. I was so prepared for the bad, that it felt much easier, much more pleasant in reality. So it’s all up to the expectations you have. On the other hand, the guilt feeling still showed up. I wasn’t prepared for it.  I remember the horrible sensation I had when Vlad only was 1 and a half years old- maybe 2 and I would leave him with my mother because I had rehearsals, shootings or theatre plays. I wanted to keep doing my job, but on the other hand I felt guilty that I’m not with him when he could have learned a new word!  Whether you are a stay at home mom or go back to work, whether you when him or keep breastfeeding, I you get a babysitter or not, if you co sleep or not… you’ll still feel guilty at some point.  I think this is mainly because there’s too much pressure on mothers in general. Too many advice about how you should be, what you should do, feel. To many standards which are impossible to achieve, coming from the outside and too few people speaking about family life for real. I see how many mothers are ashamed to admit that their child has thrown a tantrum. Like the child’s fury is not an absolutely normal emotion, like any other, which must be validated as such. But no, if you confess to having these difficulties, it means there’s something wrong with you as a mother and that you made a mistake in his/ her education. Far too much is asked of you. Too much pressure. Hence the guilt.
