The Rider

EN: A new blog post from the Fashion& Films series, which means another recommended movie, but also an outfit inspired by it.

EN: During the Independent American Film Festival, I saw the movie “The Rider” (directed by Chloe Zhao), which tells the story of Brady Jandreau, a cowboy who suffers a severe accident and is faced with the decision between giving up riding and rodeo for good or going on, with the risk of losing his life. Brady Jandreau is not a fictional character, he’s the same one as in real life. Meaning Brady plays his own life story in this film, in which there are no professional actors. The father, sister, best friend, absolutely every actor in the movie are the real “characters” in the life of Brady Jandreau. You might think that it’s much easier for an actor to play his own life, to be the same in front or behind the camera. That he doesn’t have to make anything up, he jus has to “play himself”. But actually it’s extremely complicated even for a professional actor. And the great success of this movie (awarded at Cannes in 2017 among others) is mainly due to the director, who displayed some crazy courage to work exclusively with non professionals, while still managing to create an unbelievably intimate atmosphere. Usually, when a director chooses to work with non professionals, who do their thing in their own environment, you get the feeling that the camera is set somewhere far away and that you, as a spectator, can analyze/ judge the action detached. But this film takes you straight between these young men- cowboys- rodeo boys, reserves you a seat at their bond fire, another one in the saddle, during a ride along the dry areas of America, so close to their dreams, but also greatest fears, that, after you watch “The Rider”, you’ll always think about these young Americans.

And the outfit inspired by this film is made up by: Tex shirt, vintage leather shorts and vintage cowboy boots, both bought from Barcelona (where you can find some of the best vintage boutiques in Europe), belt from Vintage Couture Shop.
